Open call for artists from Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Germany, Russia, Poland, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark to submit artwork to the first Baltic Sea Region picture book competition — Quadrennial «Picture Story». The deadline for applications is February 13, 2014.
Picture Book Quadrennial is a competition and exhibition that is going to be held every four years in Riga. The first Picture Book Quadrennial is part of Riga — European Capital of Culture 2014 programme. It is organized by the National Library of Latvia in cooperation with The International Board of Books for Young People (IBBY). The quadrennial will take place from April 2 to May 2, 2014 in the National Library of Latvia.
Aim of the competition is to promote the development of the picture book genre, to encourage new artists’ participation in book related art projects and to support distribution of high quality picture books in the Baltic Sea Region. Conference «A World in a Picture Book», opening of the exhibition and award ceremony on April 2 will gather well known artists, other professionals of the field and young artists from 10 countries.
To take part in the Quadrennial’s competition, one has to submit illustrations, design proposal and a concept for the content of a picture book. A mandatory prerequisite — the participating artwork has not been previously published in a book. An international jury will choose the participants and evaluate the artworks, and several prizes will be awarded. The winner will receive financial and organizational support for publishing a picture book and a money prize of 1500 euros.

Applications can be submitted in Latvian or in English, by sending a digital copy to picturestory2014@gmail.com until February 13, but the printed copy — to the National Library of Latvia Children’s Literature Centre in Riga, Tērbatas iela 65, LV–1010 until February 20.
