The Estonian Academy of Arts (EAA) has launched their first international summer school — the Tallinn Summer Academy of Art, Design and Architecture «Edge/Blurring Boundaries». It will be held in August and will offer courses in various visual culture research and artistic disciplines, focusing on innovative, solution–seeking, salient topics. The teaching staff of the Academy includes leading educators, researchers and artists from the EAA and partner universities.
August 1–10
The Interior Architecture Department’s international summer school «Flooded» will use the natural flooding in Soomaa swampland as a laboratory for global problems. As the result, the bog and overflowing rivers of Soomaa will be offered a new steady pause, a solid ground for the wanderer, a connection or bridge to another unreachable island. The course welcomes architects, spatial designers, interior architects, designers, artists. The summer school will be tutored by an international team of architects, representing both practice and academia —«b210 architects», Sami Rintala, Hannes Praks.
August 14–15
«The Contemporary Art Field in Estonia» short course will provide an overview of how the contemporary art scene in Estonia functions — the most important organisations, the movers and shakers, the currently important and active artists from different disciplines, and the types of events being held. The course will be led by Maarin Ektermann, an art critic and a teaching staff member at the Academy of Arts and head of the Kumu Art Museum’s Educational Centre.
August 21–25
During the workshop «Clay 3D Printing — Presence and Possibilities» the participants will learn the technical skills of 3D printing and printing in clay: creating G–code and STL files, plus preparation of clay and printing. There will be four supervisors: artists Jonathan Keep, Kaiko Kivi, Lauri Kilusk, Madis Kaasik. Admission is open to students who have experience working with the 3D program(s). Experience in 3D printing is recommended but not required.
At the same time «Numbers and Cognition in the Urban Environment» course will also take place in Tallinn. The objective of the workshop is to get closer to a representation of the city that stems from the individual, and developing a deeper understanding of what a given indicator means in an urban analysis. Participants will become well–versed in methods and means for quantitatively and qualitatively documenting the street–level space. The course will be taught by Raul Kalvo and Mikk Meelak. Admission is open to students studying architecture or urban design and whose focus is the street–level space. In addition, this course welcomes those studying to become traffic engineers, geographers, statisticians, psychologists or computer scientists.
August 21–28
The workshop «Toys for Elephants» will feature constructing and building large–scale, custom–dimensioned features for the elephants in the Tallinn Zoo to raise their cognitive capacity. The workshop will yield a number of conceptual solutions, of which 4–5 will be chosen to be executed in reality. The tutor for the course will be Lauri Snellman, a Senior Lecturer in Design Engineering at the University of Lapland in Finland.
August 28–30
The workshop «Telling Stories — Language in Video & Video as Language» will focus on the use of narration in moving images. A selection of video artists’ works will be presented to serve as examples of the various ways narration is employed in video, art and participants will have the chance to present their projects and receive feedback. The course will be led by a multi–media–artist Clemens Wilhelm. Admission is open to participants who have experience in the medium of video or film.
