In mid-February, a new magazine for kids, Lasis, was launched — its aim is not only to encourage the joy of reading, reasoning, and creativity in children, but also to provide a platform for Latvian illustrators. The cover of the first issue was drawn by the emerging illustrator Elvīra Beķere, who also created the illustration for the Lasis’ ongoing story by the children’s writer Luīze Pastore. Elvīra is currently working on her first comic book, and in the Nice Touch section, she recommends a must-have for every illustrator.
«If I have to suggest one thing to an up-and-coming illustrator that will make their life easier, I say, «Buy yourself a light tablet!» It goes by different names, like LED tracing pad, light drawing, copy board, and graphic light board, but I call it «Thank goodness I can copy this in two minutes, and I don’t have to redraw everything because my hand suddenly slipped».
The light tablet is my best friend, especially when I’m drawing sketches for comics. The sketching process can be a lengthy and incredibly frustrating job, but my cheap friend, which I bought for only 10 euros, saves me every time.»

Illustrator Elvīra Beķere creates characters who go on many different adventures. She has illustrated posters for the Latvian Puppet Theatre and created illustrations for various magazines. Elvīra regularly posts witty mini-comics and drawings on her Instagram account, and she is currently working on her first comic book with writer Lote Eglīte.
