Yesterday, on February 6, a new art and design gallery, Part Time, opened in Riga with a group exhibition on the relationship between artworks and time. One of the artists represented is illustrator, poet, and comic book author Lote Vilma Vītiņa, whose work is a heartfelt account of life’s ordinary and extraordinary events. In the Nice Touch section, Lote tells the story of an impulsive purchase that turned out to be useful both for practical purposes and for her art.
«On one of my frequent visits to the stationery store, I stood in an endless queue and looked around (while the hits of Radio Skonto played in the background, as always). A rack with all sorts of trinkets caught my attention. I bought some lilac, yellow, and green circle stickers like they used to stick in diaries at school — red if you did something bad, green if you did something good. Even though it seemed like a useless purchase at first, I started using them while drawing some comic sketches, sticking them on the girl’s dress, as leaves of a tree, as bubbles in the bath, as flower heads in a painting. They’re also practical — I use them as bullet points in thank-you notes, as price stickers for illustration prints, or just to stick on someone’s nose.»

Lote Vilma Vītiņa is an illustrator, poet, comic artist, and author of several books. In her work, text and drawing are often equally important. In 2019, her comic Worms, Clouds, Everything was selected by the jury of the Dpictus platform for the exhibition 100 Outstanding Picturebooks at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Lotte’s illustrations—ink line drawings accompanied by bright colours—always carry her distinctive style, and her works can be seen in print, in urban environments, and on product packaging.
Lote’s drawings are currently on display in an exhibition that has just opened at the new art and design gallery Part Time, at Tallinas iela 94, Riga.
