This week, on January 19, the exhibition of the legendary photographer Gunārs Binde, which has just been nominated for the National Design Award of Latvia 2025, closes with a programme of events at the Latvian National Museum of Art. Marking the artist’s 90th anniversary, the extensive solo exhibition looks back at the most significant themes, events, and people in the photographer’s career. In the Nice Touch section, Gunārs talks about the best way to convey your message to others.
«Nowadays, there is a tendency to complicate everything, to write long and convoluted texts for exhibitions, and to talk for the sake of talking to convince people of one’s truth. I believe that you have to reach people, excite them, and then leave them be, encouraging them to think for themselves.
That’s why I consider my «nice touch» to be the ability to talk about my creative work in an open, direct, and uncomplicated way. Working with students in art schools and lecturing to people of all ages, I have noticed that a narrative that is sincere and not cluttered with superfluous words and dry facts is best received. Moreover, I approach everything with a healthy dose of humour.»
During his 67-year career, Gunārs Binde (1933) has gained both local and international recognition, winning dozens of awards in international photography exhibitions. His work is defined by a subtle approach to light, an analysis of human psychological states, and a nuanced depiction of nudes. The exhibition Binde 100–10 summarises the photographer’s outstanding achievements and is on view at the Latvian National Museum of Art until January 19. On the closing day, visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artist himself. Alongside the exhibition, a comprehensive photography book has been published, which explores sixteen of Binde’s most important themes and series of works.
