Ingūna Elere, the co-founder and lead designer at H2E, not only works on diverse design projects but is also actively involved in design education, heading the Department of Interior Design at the Art Academy of Latvia, and promotes understanding of design in society. In her practice, Ingūna always emphasises the importance of process in achieving a successful solution, and in the Nice Touch section, the designer talks about an item that is an integral part of her creative process.

«I always have a pencil with me. I write with pencil, sketch with pencil, and draw with pencil. If I need a pen to sign some papers, I borrow it. I like the feel of the pencil on the paper. It is the starting point for every work. There is always so much freedom, possibility, and hope in the initial sketches that formulate and manifest an idea.

It’s important to me that the pencil is sharp, so I have pencil sharpeners at home, in the H2E studio, and in the countryside as well. The model of the pencil sharpener is also important to me — it has to be manual, with the ability to adjust the sharpness. Without a pencil sharpener around, I feel only partially prepared for my work.»

Ingūna Eleres’ work focuses on the interaction between the environment and the graphic design, creating experiences that unite places and people. The projects implemented by H2E, such as the exhibitions of the Riga Motor Museum and the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia and the visual identities of Liepāja and Alūksne, show an approach to design as a communication tool. H2E’s work has been recognised with a number of awards — the SEGD Award, the Red Dot Design Award, the German Design Award, the IF Design Award, the TEA Thea Award, and the Excellence Award in Culture of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia. Ingūna is also a co-founder of the SEGD Riga Chapter.
