A few weeks ago, the internationally renowned fashion brand Fyodor Golan opened its retrospective, Harmonious Collision, at the Museum Storage Facility in Riga. The exhibition presents the work of the design duo Fyodor Podgorny (Latvia) and Golan Frydman (Israel) from 2009 to 2022. In the Nice Touch section, Fyodor talks about a must-have item in any fashion designer’s arsenal.
«A pincushion is something that should be in every fashion studio. I use cushions that can be worn on the wrist, made from scraps of fabric prints from our Autumn-Winter 2017 collection. Anyone can make one from leftover fabric!
It’s good to have quite a lot of these pincushions in the studio so that many different processes can happen at the same time. They are used for draping fabric on a mannequin to find new shapes, for cutting patterns, and for holding a garment on a model or client to adapt it to the body.
An important touch when making a pad is the placement of the needles — they should be well spaced and close together. If the needles are packed sloppily together, it is harder to pick up just one, and the process doesn’t go smoothly.»
Fyodor Golan is a London-based fashion label founded in 2009 by designers Fyodor Podgorny and Golan Frydman. The brand has been showcased at fashion weeks around the world and featured in the most prestigious fashion magazines. Fyodor Golan’s clothes are favoured by international celebrities such as Madonna, Rianna, Jennifer Lopez, Ariana Grande, and others, as well as a number of Latvian cultural personalities.
The exhibition Harmonious Collision, which will be on display at the Museum Storage Facility at Pulka iela 8 in Riga until September 1, features more than 120 garments and accessories that reveal the evolution of Fyodor Golan and reflect the designers’ approach to fashion.
