Eva Abduļina, who has been better known as a graphic and type designer, now brings the nuances of typography to life in spatial design. She works at the design studio Gateris Works, which aims to transform Latvian aesthetics into objects that are used in everyday life. Two Gateris Works projects have just been nominated for the National Design Award of Latvia 2024. In the Nice Touch section, Eva talks about one of her favourite everyday things.
«Due espresso per favore! When making coffee in a mug, the style of brew Latvians call «peat», on a daily basis, I used to overdose on coffee, drinking 3–4 full cups in total. So, inspired by the Italian 90-cent espresso at 7:00 a.m., I try to limit (and ritualise) my coffee habits in an elegant way. Take a deep breath, take a charge of energy, and let’s move on! The Gemini Express is essentially a moka pot that dispenses exactly two cups of espresso into the cups provided. I bought this exquisite coffee gadget, designed in Italy in 1968, in bright yellow from the MoMA design shop, which of course earns it plus points from design snobs.»
Eva Abduļinapreviously worked as a graphic and type designer at the Overpriced studio. Eva has designed unique typefaces for the Zuzeum Art Centre and has worked on the rebranding of the cosmetics manufacturer Dzintars. Her typeface Austra is a modern interpretation of Latvia’s typographic heritage, and currently, Eva is also bringing Latvian aesthetics to spatial design, working in the studio Gateris Works. Two of the studio’s projects, the Gateris Works furniture collection and the outdoor facilities of the Ziedonis Museum, created in collaboration with Overpriced, have been nominated for the National Design Award of Latvia 2024.
